In October this year, two corporate giants declared their new working policy in the wake of the economic changes brought on by COVID-19. Coca-Cola unveiled its new work from home policy, allowing WFH on a permanent basis for employees whose presence is not required on site.
Not soon after, Deloitte declared that it will be permanently closing four of its branches in England, allowing all employees there to continue working from home for the foreseeable future.
This change is not isolated to Coca-Cola and Deloitte. Many others are following suit while others like Amazon and Google have extended their WFH policies till June of next year.
What does this imply for our IT infrastructure? How can we strengthen and empower our teams while they lie scattered across the globe?
The answer resides in the cloud.
With offices being set up in homes and office operations spread across geographies, cloud played a rather crucial role in the IT operations of many organizations in the past few months.
Cloud provides a collaborative, secure, and a rather expansive platform for the people of a company to come together and work towards a common goal. Data can be secure, work can be shared, and moreover, everything can be accessed anywhere, anytime.
While many are apprehensive about migrating to cloud, many others have been bold about it.
Why should you move to cloud? Here’s why.
Traditional IT operations come at a very high cost. Operations on the cloud not only reduce the IT costs significantly but it also makes the operations scalable. Reducing the physical storage requirements is one way of doing it. Another way is by reducing the burden on your IT team since most third-party cloud services come with their own customer support. This means that you can redeploy your IT team for other meaningful tasks.
A significant cost cut happens in terms of technology accessibility. Cloud services are up to date with the latest tech integration, which means the cost of accessing the latest tech in town is already covered.
Myth bust: Moving IT operations to the cloud is expensive.
Cloud computing leaves you the master of your choices. You can pick and choose which applications, features, and services you require and pay for only those. There is no add-on service that is simply a blind third eye that you carry around.
The alternative is buying an inflexible pre-designed package, of which half the features don’t even matter to you. You negate the need for additional update costs for your favourite features as well.
The pricing innovation called rightsizing adopted by Google Cloud Platform is a great example of this pay-as-you-go service. It has a customer-friendly pricing policy where there is no up-front cost and no termination fees and most of all, you pay as you go!
Myth bust: Cloud services come at a higher cost because of all the additional features.
Although, once you try it out, there’s very little chance of that.
On-premise facilities inevitably come with infrastructural requirements and associated costs. Hence, discontinuing that solution comes with strings attached. Not so with cloud.
Cloud services come with great flexibility and freedom of choice. You can increase or decrease your server capacity, add or remove users, and add additional features as and when you require. There is no infrastructural commitment required from your end, so these tasks are practically child’s play. You have the freedom to update your needs as per your business requirement without having to worry about long-term commitment.
Myth bust: It is a big step migrating to cloud considering constantly changing business needs.
This is the most important advantage you can get out of cloud services. Large cloud service providers like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon leverage the latest technology in security and their data centers are monitored 24×7.
Google Cloud Platform, for example, provides state-of-the-art security features to its customers that the company itself uses for its operations. This means that all your data is guarded by the leading tech in the industry through layers of security, both hardware and software.
With Google, the monitoring and protection happen continuously and automatically, not to mention their strict adherence to GDPR.
In a previous blog, we had covered the shocking data leak at Marriott. None of that will happen with cloud services.
(PS: Watch out for our special feature blog on Google’s security protocols. It’ll be quite a read!)
Myth bust: Cloud services aren’t as secure as on-premise solutions.
Cloud service providers are big players, which means that they have access to the latest and the most reliable technology to play with. Most of them like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, are constantly innovating, offering only the best to their customers.
Maintenance and updates are always carried out by them on their own, with no hassle to the customers. Data backups and recovery of lost data are easy hurdles to tackle with little to no effort needed from your side.
Added to that is the easy access to innovation. Their technologies give you abundant opportunities to innovate on your own and come up with business solutions tailored to your needs.
Myth bust: Cloud tech might not get updated on time.
